"Dead Ringers" (1988) is a psychological thriller directed by David Cronenberg, featuring Jeremy Irons in a compelling dual role as twin gynecologists, Elliot and Beverly Mantle. Operating a successful clinic in Toronto, the twins specialize in treating fertility issues. Elliot, the more confident and manipulative twin, often seduces their patients and then passes them on to the more introverted Beverly, unbeknownst to the women. The delicate balance between them is disrupted when Beverly becomes emotionally involved with one of their patients, actress Claire Niveau, leading to a downward spiral of drug addiction and psychological turmoil. The film masterfully explores themes of identity, dependency, and the dark intersections of medical ethics and personal obsession.
